Furnace Noises to Look Out For

Keeping warm is easy to do with your furnace or HVAC system, but what happens when you hear a strange furnace noise? Some of those noises could mean trouble while others are not as bad as they may sound.

Here at Anderson Air Corps we strive to help tell the difference in those noises and assist you when you need a furnace repair, furnace replacement, or service.

Take a look at the list of furnace noises below and what they most commonly mean when you hear them. While you may not always be able to tell the problem, this is a good place to start.

Rattling Noise

You may hear a rattling sound when your furnace is running. If so, you can try to check on the cover panels and see if they are loose. If that is the case, all you need to do is tighten them back up and the furnace noise should stop. If it does not quit, you may need to call a certified technician to come out and inspect the unit.

Loud Pop Noise

When your heating system turns on or off, you may hear a loud bang or a popping sound. This is simply the metal ductwork and the fan together starting to work together. When the system turns out the pressure may pull the ductwork in and that’s the pop you hear. When the cycle is over, it’ll pop back out again. It can also be a sign that your ductwork isn’t as strong as it should be.

Squealing Noise

You might hear a high-pitched squealing noise coming from your furnace or outside unit. In this case it is generally a belt that is slipping or needs to be replaced. The belt that runs the fan can end up breaking and it will stop your blower from running and turning properly. If you hear this furnace noise you need to either change the belt if you’re comfortable, or call your local HVAC technician.

Thumping or Vibration

You may hear something similar to your washing machine getting out of balance. In that case it is typically the blower wheel on your system that is out of balance. If you hear it, it’s time to call in a professional. While it’s not a huge problem, it can cause costly furnace repairs later down the line.

Grinding

If you’re hearing a grinding noise coming from your furnace, stop the system and call in your furnace service team. This means that your blower motor’s bearings are in need of replacing or the belt could need to be replaced as well.

Rumbling Noises

When you have a gas or oil fuelled furnace and you start to hear a rumbling furnace noise that seems to be in conjunction with the combustion of the system, call someone in immediately. You may even need to turn off the system until our team or your HVAC team gets there. This noise generally means there’s a problem with the burner system in the unit and that can spell disaster if not properly taken care of.

While some of the furnace noises are mild in nature, other times they can spell major furnace repair problem for you.
